Overall information
Mie prefecture is located
almost in the center of Japan, between Tokyo
and Osaka. Nearest big city is Nagoya
which has an international airport. The most famous architectural
treasure in Mie is Ise Shrine, which was admired by Bruno Taut as the
only representative of the essence of Japanese architecture.
Tsu-city is a relatively a small city but is the governmental center of
Mie prefecture. It takes approximately 1 hour to get to Nagoya and
Nara, 1.5 hour to Osaka, 2 hours to Kyoto, 4 hours to Tokyo from
Tsu-City by train.
Mie University is a national university
which has 5 faculties, Humanities, Bio-resources, Education, Medicine
and Engineering. Our department, Architecture, belongs to the Faculty
of Engineering. Deptartment of Architecture has normally 16 faculties,
4
staffs, around 200 undergrad students and around 40 graduate students.
Our campus is directly in front of Ise gulf. The University has a
international house for accommodation in the walking distance.
Department of Architecture here was established in 1980, relatively
new in Japan.
However, as we are quite near from historic locations, here is a good
place to study
Japanese historic environments and buildings.
Our lab is the only one concerning the proper architectural design
here. In
accepting foreign student at my lab, any communication, including
seminars sessions, will be held in strange mixture of Japanese and
English. However, certain conversation skill of the daily level and
some knowledge of technical
terms will be required to get course credits, because almost all
lectures are held in Japanese.
We had studied with many foreign students
at my lab, from Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Tanzania, South
Africa, China, Korea, Serbia, Moldova and Spain.
We have accepted rather many PFC
students from Universidad Politecnica de
Valencia, under the agreement of academic exchange between MIE-UPV.
